Imagine a large building with multiple rows of nuts and bolts, shelves of parts and equipment and closets of PPE (personal protective equipment or safety gear). Now, imagine that each piece in this building is tracked and accounted for by a powerful computer system that alerts you the moment an item is requested. Finally, imagine that each department at Baffinland’s Mary River or Milne Port sites is able to send automatic requests at any given time.
At the Mary River Project we have two separate warehouse facilities that do just that. A team of Warehouse Technicians are responsible for locating and delivering requested items on an efficient and timely basis.
Our Port & Logistics Department is the hub for all movement of parts and materials that come in and out of the site. Each year when the sealift docks in Milne, the Port and Logistics team is responsible for the fast and efficient offloading of all materials. Additionally, each time a plane lands Port and Logistics is tasked with processing all the goods transported in each week.
In order for the warehouse to run smoothly, a large team of technicians is needed to ensure accuracy, efficiency and strong customer service. The process starts with a request from a department or individual via computer system. The Warehouse Technician then receives a ticket with a list of the needed materials/parts. The technician then hunts through the warehouse for the requested items, collecting and checking off each item. Once the Warehouse Technician has located all the pieces, they deliver them to the front desk for pick up. Because the warehouse is central hub for all movement of materials, the Warehouse Technician is constantly in movement. If you are a person who likes a fast paced environment, this might be the job for you. All you need is a high school education to qualify for this position.
Mentoring and managing this team of Warehouse Technicians, is a group of Warehouse Supervisors, there to lend support to the Technicians at any time. The supervisors are also responsible for the arrangement and off-loading of sealifts, following all domestic and foreign vessels, and tracking and reporting on all Warehouse activity. Ultimately, this group is focused on the accountability of all materials going in and out of the Mary River Project. If you are a strong leader, enjoy mathematics, and thrive in a high-paced environment, look no further. The prerequisite for this position is experience and a high school education.
The last group that makes up the Port and Logistics Department is the team of Buyers. A Buyer is an individual who is responsible for purchasing goods and materials at the lowest possible price. They are fierce negotiators, resource hunters and have strong multi-tasking abilities. At Baffinland, the Buyer works with all different departments to understand the resource needs. They then go out into the industry and find the best possible price and quality. It is part of a Buyer’s responsibility to input all goods and materials into the specialized computer system (SAP). Ultimately, anything that enters the Mary River/Milne site was purchased and accounted for by the Buying Team. If you enjoying shopping, planning and negotiating, we recommend a Buying position for you. Those interested would need a Diploma or Degree in a preferred business related discipline.
