Baffinland is led by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Brian Penney. He is supported by a talented and committed senior management team with combined mining experience of over 150 years. Our leaders have amassed specialty experience on northern mining projects through all phases of aboriginal consultation, permitting, construction and operation. Many of the projects they have contributed to are notable for having raised standards in safety and environmental responsibility, for having delivered significant and long-lasting benefits to aboriginal people, as well as improving the economy, both locally and nationally.
Brian Penney, Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
Brian Penney possesses significant expertise in the iron ore industry having held various senior executive and operational roles. Brian brings experience with other commodities and more than 20 years of technical leadership roles in the iron industry. In addition to his strong operational background, Brian brings expertise in processing, planning, technical services and environmental services. Brian joins us from Alderon Iron Ore, based in Montreal, where he was COO for three years. Prior to this, he worked as President and CEO, Ridgemont Iron Ore, and Chairman of Operations, Cap-Ex Iron Ore.
Michael Anderson, Chief Technology Officer
Michael Anderson joined Baffinland in July 2011 as the Vice President of Operations and led the site team through the construction and start-up of the operation until September of 2015. With the start-up of the operation complete, Michael has moved over to the Chief Technology Officer role to apply his technical and operations experience in supporting the operation on mid-to-long-term strategic planning, as well as identifying, designing and implementing operational efficiencies. Michael has over 20 years of mining experience and holds a Master of Science degree in Mining Engineering from Queen’s University as well as Professional Engineer and Chartered Professional Accountant designations.
Stephanie Anderson, Chief Financial Officer
Stephanie Anderson joins Baffinland Iron Mines from Dundee Precious Metals Inc., where she held the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Prior to that Ms. Anderson spent 19 years at Inco Limited (now Vale) in positions of increasing responsibility, including the last four years as Vice President and Treasurer. Ms. Anderson has more than 25 years of experience in finance and metals and mining. During her tenure with Inco, Ms. Anderson played a key role in major acquisitions and developments including the Voisey’s Bay Project in Newfoundland and Labrador and the Goro Nickel Project in New Caledonia. She was responsible for global finance and treasury activities including bank lending and capital market transactions and managed the relationships with the major credit rating agencies. She also led a variety of high-profile taskforces for Inco. Ms. Anderson holds an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from the University of New Brunswick and an M.B.A. from the University of Toronto.
Todd Burlingame, Vice President of Sustainable Development
Todd Burlingame possesses over twenty five years’ experience delivering full suites of bankable environmental and regulatory approvals and negotiating Impact and Benefits Agreements for large scale projects across northern Canada. Projects include iron ore and diamond mines, mineral processing facilities, large scale hydroelectric plants, pipelines, and Chairing two Federal/First Nations Co-Management Boards. A lifetime northerner, originally from Alaska, Todd holds a B.Sc. in Geology from the University of British Columbia.
Sandeep Kumar, Chief Procurement Officer
Sandeep Kumar has been in Steel and Mining Industry for about a decade in different Senior roles in Supply Chain in Africa, Europe and Canada. In the role of Chief Procurement Officer Sandeep has the responsibility for the Mine and Port Site Warehouse and all procurement activities.
Sandeep has an MBA, with a Major in Strategy & Finance, from the Indian Institute of Management, a premier Business School, and holds a Bachelor degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering. He has Project Management Professional® certification from PMI, USA and is nearing completion of Supply Chain Management Professional program in Canada.
Richard (Dick) Matthews, Vice President, Technical Services
Dick Matthews joined Baffinland in July 2008. Before this, he worked as Divisional Manager – Mining at Snowden Mining Industry Consultants, an international consulting firm. Earlier employment included operations, technical and management roles at Rossing Uranium (Namibia), Bougainville Copper and Lihir Gold Mine (Papua New Guinea), Argyle Diamonds and Rio Tinto Iron Ore (Australia), Minera Alumbrera (Argentina) and Minera Yanacocha (Peru). Mr. Matthews’ experience covers many commodities, single and multiple pits and processes, surface and underground mines, selective and bulk mining methods, high and low altitudes, many climatic conditions and the start-up of several mines in remote locations. Mr. Matthews holds a Bachelor of Science (Mining Engineering) from Queen’s University.
Tom Paddon, Non-Executive Chairman
Tom Paddon is the Non-Executive Chairman of Baffinland. Mr. Paddon and Qikiqtani Inuit Association president Okalik Eegeesiak signed a historic Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement as well as a commercial production lease Sept. 6, 2013 in Iqaluit. Mr. Paddon’s previous experience of developing and operating the Voisey’s Bay Project, also in Canada’s north, involved successfully integrating the rights of indigenous peoples with unparalleled environmental performance standards and the developer’s commercial interests. The Voisey’s Bay Project set new benchmarks for achieving social license and commercial success in remote mining operations.
Lisa Parker, Head of Human Resources
Lisa Parker holds a degree in Biology, a designation in training & development, and 4 HR related specializations. Having grown up in the mining town of Sudbury, Ontario, she is fluently bilingual in French and English. For more than 15 years, Lisa has held various leadership roles in Human Resources, specializing in learning, organizational development, and talent management. She has led organizational change initiatives and implementations of HR policies, processes, programs and systems in medium to large organizations in five industries, both public and private, at the national and global level. Most recently Lisa was IAMGOLD’s Head of Global Talent Management, and also completed an expatriate assignment as HR Manager for IAMGOLD’s Rosebel Gold Mines in Suriname South America.
Sylvain Proulx, Chief Operating Officer
Sylvain Proulx has joined Baffinland Iron Mines as the new Chief Operating Officer. In this role he is responsible for providing full oversight and management to the Mary River Mine and Milne Port site operations and activities.
Sylvain is a mechanical engineer with over 20 years of progressive leadership experience in the pulp and paper industry. Most recently, he was the General Manager at Resolute Forest Products in Clermont QC. Sylvain has extensive experience optimizing operations with a safe-production focus. He has led reliability and continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen the business’ strategic position.
Michael T. Zurowski, Executive Vice President
President of Baffinland from February 2004 to June 2005, Mr. Zurowski relinquished his role as President and became Executive Vice President in 2005. Prior to joining Baffinland, Mr. Zurowski was an independent industry consultant and an associate at Watts Griffis and McOuat where he was the project manager for the Comprehensive Mineral Development Strategy for the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Mr. Zurowski has more than 25 years’ experience in the management and evaluation of advanced projects including 15 years with the Rio Tinto Group, initially based in Canada, then in Africa and Europe with shorter stints in other parts of the world. Mr. Zurowski is a Professional Engineer graduating from the University of Toronto in 1984 with a B.A.Sc. in Geological Engineering. In addition, Mr. Zurowski is a director of Matachewan Consolidated Mines, Limited and Golden Hope Mines Limited.
