Our leadership team has amassed specialty experience on northern mining developments, from community consultation and permitting, through to operation. Many of the projects they have contributed to have raised standards in safety, environmental monitoring, and social impact, improving economies both locally and nationally.

Baffinland Brian Penney

Brian Penney, Chief Executive Officer

Brian Penney is our chief executive officer. Mr. Penney has over 25 years’ experience in the mining industry, including 20 years of technical leadership roles in the iron industry.

Prior to joining Baffinland, Mr. Penney was the chief operating officer of Alderon Iron Ore. He also worked as president and chief executive officer of Ridgemont Iron Ore and worked for the Iron Ore Company of Canada for 15 years. He has a B.Eng. (metallurgical engineering) from the Technical University of Nova Scotia.

Stephanie Anderson, Executive Vice President, Corporate Development

Stephanie Anderson is our executive vice president, corporate development. Prior to joining Baffinland, Ms. Anderson was the executive vice president and chief financial officer for Dundee Precious Metals Inc. Prior to that, she spent 19 years with Inco Limited (now Vale). She holds a B.Sc. (geology) from the University of New Brunswick and an M.B.A. from the University of Toronto.

Mark O’Brien, Executive Vice President and General Counsel

Mark O’Brien is Baffinland’s executive vice president and general counsel. He has experience with a variety of legal matters, including public and private offerings of equity and debt securities, loan financings, joint ventures and corporate governance, working with some of the largest clients in Canada, including large international mining companies. He has a JD from the University of Toronto, as well as a BBA from the University of Prince Edward Island.

Grant Goddard, Vice President Sustainable Development and Human Resources

Grant has nearly 40 years’ experience in resource development across Canada. Most recently, Grant was the General Manager for New Gold Inc.’s Rainy River Project, a significant gold development in northern Ontario. He also has experience in Nunavut, working with TMAC on the Hope Bay Project during the development of the project. His experience with iron ore mining includes working for the Iron Ore Company of Canada for over ten years, including as vice president of operations, leading various improvement projects across the operation.


Sylvain Proulx, Chief Operating Officer

Sylvain Proulx is our chief operating officer, providing oversight and management to the Mary River Mine and Milne Port site operations and activities. He has over 20 years of leadership experience and has led major reliability and continuous improvement initiatives for resource companies in Canada. He has a B.Eng. (mechanical engineering) from the Université Laval.
