Iqaluit, NU, October 7, 2019 – Baffinland Iron Mines Inc. (Baffinland) is pleased to announce the names of the 2019 Scholarship Program award recipients.

This year’s students provided with a $5,000 award are:

Sylvia Pewatooalok, Jena Merkosak, Tyson Angnetsiak and Lynn Angnatsiak of Pond Inlet, and Emily Karpik, Amy Lewis, and Mary Sarah Nikki-Disco of Iqaluit, NU

We support the educational development of students by providing a number of scholarships each year. “Education and training go hand-in-hand as an important part of Baffinland’s commitments to the North Baffin communities and helping these students be successful,” said Brian Penney, Baffinland President and CEO. “We support and encourage the pursuit of post-secondary education and recognize the importance of learning and development as a pillar to the ongoing development of the North Baffin communities and all of Nunavut. There were many applicants this year from several Nunavut communities, and it was a really, tough final decision. Typically, we award five, $5000 scholarships on an annual basis for Nunavut Inuit who are registered with Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. This year it was clear we had an outstanding group of applicants and we chose to recognize seven deserving students”.

This Program exists to provide an opportunity for Nunavut, Inuit students to receive financial support.  Since 2014, Baffinland has awarded $170,000 to 34 well-deserving students in pursuit of continuing education. Students are welcome to apply each year that they further their education.
